The InterView Challenge By Dr. Cormac Lankford
|
The idea for this book arose from a thesis, which the author submitted for a Master's Degree in Applied Psychology.
The thesis examined the interview skills of hundreds of job applicants by asking practicing training managers,
human resources managers and managing directors to evaluate the videotaped recordings of such interviewees in
interview settings. The author also conducted a survey among approximately 60 multinational and indigenous companies.
Therefore, the comments of real interviewers and research, arising from recent studies conducted into interview
procedures on banks, the army, the police and many other organizations, formed the background for this book.
There is no better way of establishing what the requirements of interviewers are than by asking them to comment
on the performances of interviewees. In this way, it is possible to identify the behaviour, which employment
interviewers regard as acceptable, and the answers that they expect to receive. This is precisely what was done
as preparatory work and it is within such a framework that the author developed the hard-headed, practical steps
for success that are outlined here for job applicants. Furthermore, the select bibliography, given at the end of
the book, clearly demonstrates how closely related to the needs of the real world the book is.
The employment interview cannot be described purely as a game or as an exercise in communication skills, as some
commentators would have us believe, nor can it be dealt with through reliance on certain sterile rules or precepts.
For this reason, the research has been carefully sifted and the comments of company interviewers have been organized
in such a way that the reader can find useful tips no matter which section of the book is opened. Special care has
been taken to avoid complex sentences, which worried interview applicants have little time to read through.
The author gives examples of actual interviews, answers, CVs, aptitude tests and selection policies that are taken
from his research into the contemporary situation. It is suggested that you use these as models for your interview.
You are asked to fill in a number of preparatory questionnaires and you are given sample tests to do, the answers
for which are provided. These are kept to a minimum because the objective of the book is to reduce the amount of
preparation that the busy job applicant has to do. While a degree of self-analysis is encouraged, the focus of the
book is on the tangible and real task of coping with the interview.
The style of writing is direct, succinct and user friendly, so that the candidate will be equipped to deal with the
employment interview as a challenge, which can be met head on, by proper planning, adequate rehearsal and thorough
research. It is clear, from the unemployment statistics throughout Europe that it is only the most skilled people,
in every sense, who will progress. This book will concentrate your attention on how you can translate your life
experiences and skills into 'marketable assets' during your interview challenge.
